Floral interpretations of Scottsdale’s eight sister cities will be on display March 1-2 throughout the Mustang Branch of Scottsdale’s Public Library. The creations are the work of members of the Scottsdale Garden Club and other Valley garden clubs which are judged according to standards established by National Garden Clubs, Inc.
According to Judy Kennedy, Show Chairperson, the club chose “New Directions: Celebrating Scottsdale’s Sister Cities” as the theme for its bi-annual Flower Show because “the wonderful diversity of Scottsdale’s sister cities offered great opportunities for creative expression and to showcase how flowers are a common language throughout the world.”
There will be over 50 designs encompassing large and small creative tableaus, some as small as 5 inches high; artistic crafts; and tablescapes for couples, for buffets and for brunch trays. All will illustrate sister city themes such are: “Swiss Dreams,” “Mexican Memories,” “Green It Up,” “Sonoran Wonders” and “Unity through Nature.”
“Friendships through Flowers” will be interpreted by four classrooms of 1st graders. Plus an interactive game to inspire international goodwill and understanding is being created with the assistance of the Scottsdale Artists’ School.
Gardeners and horticulturists will also enter their flowering annuals and perennials, citrus, herbs, arboreal branches, and container plantings for judging.
Scottsdale Garden Club was organized in 1977, just a few years after Alamos, Sonora, Mexico became our first Sister City in 1969. Visit https://scottsdalegc.org/ for more information on their programs.
“We are delighted that the Scottsdale Garden Club is helping SSCA promote our mission to the citizens of Scottsdale and beyond,” noted Neil Ciarfalia, SSCA president, who will be part of Saturday’s ribbon cutting ceremony along with City of Scottsdale Mayor Lisa Borowsky.
